Lari Lohikoski reviewed Metamodernism by Brendan Graham Dempsey
A great overview of different articulations of "metamodern"
4 stars
This book offers a great overview of how thinkers from different fields have been trying to describe what many have called "metamodernism", the next stage of cultural development after postmodernism. It also aims at a kind of synthesis between them: though many thinkers mentioned have described metamodernism somewhat differently, they all share the same basic logic.
Whereas postmodernism was deconstructive, metamodernism aims at reconstruction: its objective is to move beyond postmodernism, use all the insights gained in previous premodern, modern and postmodern phases, and finally overcome postmodern disintegration. This allows again for a coherent, unironic worldview.
