Väsymättä ja kapinoimatta jatkuvasti työtä tekevät elottomat golemit saavat päähänsä rakentaa itselleen mestariksi golemkuninkaan, mutta kaikki ei menekään aivan putkeen vaan syntyy yhteenottoja golemien ja elollisten kaupunkilaisten välille. Golemien kautta Pratchett tarkastelee tekoälyn ja robotiikan etiikkaa ja koneiden kapinaa sekä ottaa vapauden ja vakauden tarkasteluun mukaan myös rojalismin pohdinnan. Hieman väsyneemmän oloista sen sijaan on sukupuolten, neurokirjon ja etnisen moninaisuuden tarkastelu, koska onhan kirja kirjoitettu 1990-luvulla anglosfäärissä eikä se siitä mihinkään pääse. Tarinan kuljetus sujuu kyllä hyvin.
