Steinbeck considered East of Eden to be his masterpiece. In his journal, Journal of a Novel (often read as a companion to the novel) he notes that “this is the book I have always wanted and have worked and prayed to be able to write Set primarily in the Salinas Valley in the early twentieth century, the novel traces three generations of two families – the Trasks and the Hamiltons – as they grapple with the ever-present forces of good and evil. Zwischen Schuld, Freiheit und Staub – Steinbeck hat mein Herz erwischt

Jenseits von Eden ist kein Buch, das man einfach mal so liest. Es ist ein Buch, das mit einem spricht. Flüstert. Brüllt. Und manchmal schweigt – aber genau dann trifft es am tiefsten.

Ich habe es aufgeschlagen, ohne viel zu wissen, und plötzlich war ich mitten in Kalifornien. Zwei Familien, die Trask und die Hamiltons, ihre Generationen, ihre Fehler, ihre Hoffnungen. Es geht um Liebe. Um Hass. Um das Ringen mit dem eigenen Schatten.

Was mich gepackt hat, war diese einfache, große Frage: Sind wir frei, anders zu handeln als unsere Eltern? Oder sind wir verdammt, das Gleiche zu wiederholen?

Steinbeck schreibt so, dass du die Hitze auf der Haut spürst, den Staub zwischen den Zähnen hast. Seine Figuren sind nicht perfekt – aber gerade deshalb echt. Samuel Hamilton habe ich geliebt. Cathy habe ich gefürchtet. Caleb hat mir das Herz gebrochen.

Und dann dieses Wort: Timschel. „Du kannst.“ Nicht …

Jenseits von Eden ist wie ein großes, langsames Lied. Man hört es, und irgendetwas darin klingt nach einem selbst.

Für mich ist klar: Das ist nicht nur ein Roman. Das ist eine Lebenserfahrung zwischen zwei Buchdeckeln.

This has to be one of the best novels, I've ever read. True, it's a big commitment, but the sprawling storyline and the character development give this story an unprecedented depth.
