Review of 'The Casual Vacancy' on 'Storygraph'

Tragic story of a moment of grief and a resulting war between the people of Pagford. The ever struggling people of this small English town are full of envy against each other, and this envy is ready to burst and engulf all of them amidst the resulting chaos. They are weak, vulnerable and, to put it nicely, assholes.

The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowlings take on adult literature, and though it is an 'OK, got nothing better to do, so let's read this thing!'-kind of a story, it's not a really good one. I feel like she tried to squeeze a massive and epic battle of wills into too little space and the resulting chaos was not a good read for me. There were constantly too many irons hot, and it bothered me to no end. Complex, too complex, I kept thinking that it's just the language barrier that's the problem, but come on. Nope.

And the sex scenes, oh boy, let me tell you about the sex scenes. They're horrible. They're meaningless. It's like every man in Pagford is constantly ready, immediately hard no matter how intoxicated, cums immediately with no visible or real results when the penetration occurs, and the women are like mindles and numb zombies who don't feel anything. Just lying there. Thinking boy bands and shit. No. No more.

There's some good to the story though. The ending, when all that was so carefully crafted and created turns to shit and pours on the egoistic shithole known as Pagford, filling the streets and valleys to the brim with shit, and having the pieces of shit residential assholes float to the surface: That's when the story gets good. Sadly this doesn't happen until the very end so it's kind of too late at that point.

Nice try J.K. Rowling, but I didn't really like it.
