The book had a major influence on the literary community, as evidenced by direct references in Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers (1844), Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac (1897), as well as the word quixotic and the epithet Lothario; the latter refers to a character in "El curioso impertinente" ("The Impertinently Curious Man"), an intercalated story that appears in Part One, chapters 33–35.When first published, Don Quixote was usually interpreted as a comic novel. After the French Revolution, it was better known for its central ethic that individuals can be right while society is quite wrong and seen as disenchanting. In the 19th century, it was seen as a social commentary, but no one could easily tell "whose side Cervantes was on". Many critics came to view the work as a tragedy in which Don Quixote's idealism and nobility are viewed by the post-chivalric world as insane, and are defeated and rendered useless by common reality. By the 20th century, the novel had come to occupy a canonical space as one of the foundations of modern literature.
I started reading this with a group of friends, taking turns to read chapters aloud. For the first 5-10 chapters I was enthralled, finding it an utterly charming satire of essentially the same genre that Monty Python and the Holy Grail sends up. But after that it felt like it kept repeating the same jokes, and started to wear thin enough that I didn't actually finish it.
Toisessa osassa meno jatkui vielä avausosaakin päättömämmissä merkeissä. Lukukokemus oli vähän samaa sarjaa Tristram Shandyn kanssa: muutama hivenen huvittava lausahdus, mutta muuten aika tyhjänpäiväistä ja mihinkään johtamatonta kohellusta. Kirjan ydin on tiivistettynä se, että sivulliset kiusaavat mielisairasta, kukin kykyjensä ja varojensa mukaan, ja tälle sitten nauretaan ja odotetaan lukijankin nauravan. Mitään muuta motiivia kirjan tapahtumille ei ole kuin kiusanteko.
Tapani mukaan en anna kirjalle ikälisää. Sellaisenaan Don Quijoten ykkösosa on suhteellisen pitkästyttävä kuvaus epäonnisesta seikkailuretkestä, jossa ei päästä kuin muutaman päivämatkan päähän majataloon. Majatalossa ja läheisellä vuoristoseudulla junnataankin sitten loppukirja, mitään ei saada aikaiseksi, mutta sisäkertomus jos toinenkin tulee kerrotuksi. Ja se kuuluisa taistelu tuulimyllyjä vastaankin on nopeasti ohi — eihän se kestänyt edes yhtä sivua!
Joskus aikoinaan tuli nähtyä telkkarista paljon Tuttiritaria, ja ajattelin, että siinä parodioidaan Don Quijotea. Noh, nyt kirjan luettuani voin todeta, että ihan yhtä onnettomia seikkailijoita ovat kumpikin.
