What a fascinating book! Jacob Fugger was a really interesting person, and the book was well written account of his life and how he built up the family enterprise to millions of florins, making it the biggest business in the whole world in the 16th century. While at it, he invented lots of things we take for granted in business now, and was a major player in many events of the era (Luther's escapades, Habsburgs, Holy Roman Empire...). Fascinating!

Kolme ja puoli, pyöristetään neljään, lopusta jäi ihan hyvä fiilis. Kauhukirja, joka olisi saanut olla vähän pelottavampi. Tappava media on aiheena paljon käytetty, mutta tässä ihan hyvin toteutettu, ja humanistinen yliopistomaailma tarjosi mainiot puitteet tapahtumille. Loppua kohden tunnelma tosiaan tiivistyi mukavasti. Fine ending to a very good series. Things get seriously hairy, when a Russian tourist is murdered in Edinburgh. Anton is sent to investigate, and turns out there's some seriously evil mojo going on. All in all, very fascinating. Once again, there are lots of shades of grey between the extremes of good and evil, and nobody's pure good or pure evil in these books.

Räimettä Hämeenlinnassa. Jengit käyvät talvisotaansa, ruumiita tulee ja enimmäkseen ihan puhtaan tunaroinnin asemasta. Kieli tuntuu olevan tiukasti poskessa, kun Hämeenlinnan luuserirosvot sohlaavat ja vitsit lentelevät. Mikäs siinä, kepeä kesädekkari.

Not my favourite Neal Stephenson book. His style has certain features (or flaws, if you want), and here they seemed a bit more pronounced. Also, he has apparently written a book, then decided it needs another book to explain how things got set up like that. The result is massive, and there's plenty of detailed explanations of various things.

The main premise is really interesting though, and I found the first two parts in particular gripping. The beginning of the third part, not so much, but fortunately it picked up speed in the end. All in all worth the rather hefty amount of time reading this book required. For Neal Stephenson fans, but the rest of you should probably start from somewhere else in his bibliography.

Kelpo kokoelma, pari varsin mainiota novellia ja sitten muutama vähän vähemmän erinomainen, mutta silti mainio tapaus. Vähän laajempikin tämä olisi saanut olla. Lukisin kyllä mieluusti vastaavia katsauksia muidenkin maiden novellistiikkaan.

Interesting idea, interesting back story, but Barroux has a very sparse and frankly ugly drawing style, and the diary itself doesn't offer much, in the end. Short notes, just couple of months; nondescript preparations and then an abrupt ending. I suppose not everything found in garbage is gold... Oivallinen kokoelma kekseliäitä lohikäärmetarinoita, jotka eivät todellakaan kulje niitä totutuimpia latuja. Laadultaan kokoelma on tasaisen hyvä, joukosta pari erottuu edukseen, mutta oikeastaan mikään ei erotu muita huonompana.

Good book, and a great idea to include a recap of the previous books: it's more than ten years from Oryx and Crake, after all. I had no memory of what goes in that book, and not a good recollection of The Year of the Flood either.

With the recap, I was able to understand what's going on in this one. As usual, a well-written and captivating story, with interesting dystopian views.

Monen sukupolven yli venyvä draama, jossa isien synneistä saadaan maksaa ja niin edelleen. Paikoin aika hurjaa menoa, paikoin jättää asioita vähän turhankin epäselväksi. Neljäs tähti olisi tullut, jos loppu olisi kerännyt jutut pakettiin paremmin. Nyt alussa olleet kiehtovat jutut jäivät jotenkin irrallisiksi ja merkityksettömiksi, ja tietyt ratkaisevat käänteet taas esitettiin sen verran hämärästi, että lopputulema jäi vähän liian epäselväksi.

Olisipa mennyt ohi, jos ei olisi voittanut Tähtivaeltajaa. Niin hienoja kuin Painovoiman sateenkaari ja Sotilasrajan unet ovatkin, ei ihme, että Lomonosovin moottori voitti; niin vahvasti tämä heiluu omissa sfääreissään. Mikä tolkuton trippi Siperian nurjalle puolelle! Todella elämyksellinen kirja, jossa voi törmätä mitä kummallisempiin käänteisiin. Ei tästä mitään tolkkua saa, mutta tunnelma on vahva.

What a curious little book. I liked the nameless navel-gazing protagonist, and the sheer weirdness and unreliability of it all. I want to explore Area X further, this seems rather promising.
